Fat-Dissolving Injections – what does it involve?

Prior to starting the treatment, you will be assessed by our registered nurse to determine if you are suitable to receive the injections. Although the treatment is safe and low-risk for most people, they are not recommended for people who:

• Are pregnant or breastfeeding
• Are unable to produce fat naturally (lipodystrophy) or have conditions that affect fat processing in your body
• Have skin diseases or infections

Once you have been approved, the treatment area – in this case, your chin – is iced and a local anaesthetic applied. When the anaesthetic kicks in, the fat-dissolving enzyme is then injected into your chin. The injection works immediately to break apart the fat cells, and many people report feeling hot in the treated area. Holding ice to your chin for a few minutes can help relieve any feelings of discomfort.

There is little to no downtime needed after your chin fat reduction procedure. You can return to your daily activities straight after your appointment with no issue.

Are there any side effects?

As with any cosmetic treatment, there are a few side effects to be aware of before you book an appointment to dissolve your chin fat. The most noticeable is swelling, which can occur noticeably immediately after the injection is administered and can last between 2-4 days. Other side effects include redness or bruising, causing the skin in and around your chin to feel tender for as long as eight weeks post-treatment.

We strongly advise everyone who receives this treatment to refrain from using any medication that decreases swelling. If you experience mild pain or discomfort, you can take a Panadol to relieve these symptoms. We also recommend the following:

• Drink plenty of water
• Avoid washing your face for 4 hours post-treatment
• Avoid taking hot showers or baths for 24 hours post-treatment
• Refrain from drinking alcohol for a few days post-treatment
• Refrain from using self-tan products, skin creams, and exfoliants for at least a week post-treatment
• Taking a break from exercise for 10 days post-treatment

It is also important to remember that fat-dissolving treatments do just that: dissolve fat cells. They will not help you tighten your skin or rejuvenate your complexion. If you have a large double chin and are worried about loose skin after dissolving your chin fat, you will require additional treatments to truly tighten your jawline.
